BUDDING SCIENTIST MAKES THE DISTRICT PROUD

Rashmi Parvathi, Vivekananda PU College, Puttur, D. K., won a gold medal for her project, "Salt from Coconut Palm Petiole and its Anti-microbial Activity," in the International Sustainable World Olympiad for research based projects in Energy, Environment and Engineering (I-SWEEEP), a premier international high-school science fair held in Houston, Texas, USA. She found that the bio-waste of coconut petiole can be used as a substitute for increasing the plant soil nutrients and also as an anti-microbial agent against certain fungi that cause skin diseases. Her participation in the Olympiad was sponsored by the Corpus Fund set up by the Bhandary Foundation.
